People living in Uttlesford are asked to get in touch if they can give up their home to a family fleeing Ukraine.

Uttlesford District Council is advising and supporting residents who have offered their homes as emergency accommodation as part of the Government's Homes for Ukraine scheme.

The scheme allows residents to sign up to host guests, often women and children, who have fled the war.

More than 140 households in Uttlesford have already opened their homes to host 284 guests.

There are several Ukrainian guests who are now in need of alternative accommodation, with their hosts unable to continue past the initial six-month point.

This will allow the guests to continue to build on their connections and relationships in the community. Many work locally and have children attending the district's schools.

Cllr Maggie Sutton, portfolio holder for communities, said: "We thank everyone who has supported the scheme so far for their continued help and generosity, and many of our Ukrainian guests who arrived here have now returned to Ukraine or resettled elsewhere.

"The devastating war continues and there are many families who still need emergency placements.

"You may be able help if you can offer space either in your home or in an annexe or independent accommodation, for an individual or a family.

"We are especially interested in hearing from potential sponsors who could offer accommodation close to community amenities such as schools, shops and good public transport links.

"These families have already been displaced once and we want to continue to support them to remain in the communities in which they have found solace and support.

"Please consider becoming a sponsor and share this information with friends and family who may be able to help."

Hosts receive £350 a month during the first 12 months of their guests' stay. This increases to £500 once the guest has been in the UK for 12 months.

The 'thank you' payment is available for a maximum of up to two years after the guests arrive.
