Lotte Clapp says world champions England women cannot be complacent as they look to follow up Friday’s 32-0 Women’s Six Nations Championship demolition of Scotland with another victory against Italy this weekend.

Italy crashed to a 39-0 defeat in France last Saturday night, but that should not be a factor in England’s preparations for the game in Turin according Welwyn Garden City’s Clapp, who has been named in the starting XV.

The Saracens winger, who attended Sir Frederic Osborn School and played for Welwyn RFC, exclusively spoke to the Welwyn Hatfield Times after winning her third senior cap in the win over the Scots in Cumbernauld, Glasgow.

She said: “The game went well for us as a team and we got the result we wanted.

“The forwards did a great job and we played well in the backs.”

England scored five tries with Harriet Millar-Mills (two), Lauren Cattell, captain Sarah Hunter and Lucy Demaine touching down.

There’s another away trip for England this coming Saturday.

“We have Italy next which is something we can look to and build on, we can’t be complacent going into it,” she said.

“They are at home so will be strong because of that.”

Clapp is still a rookie on the senior national scene after making her debut in the Autumn international loss against France last November.

“I’m still learning from all the experiences and it’s another away game for me,” she said.

“It’s a different preparation with the flights and travel.

“I had a bit of a shaky start, some kicks were aimed at me which I didn’t deal with, but I tried to improve and grow into the game which I felt I did.”

Clapp was involved in England’s third try making space and then shouting for Millar-Mills to dot down her second of the game. She added: “I could see that the two Scotland defenders were running across to defend me, so I told her to go and she went through the gap and over.”

The opening victory of the championships is a perfect start for England who unexpectedly stumbled to a fourth place finish last year after losses to Wales, Ireland and France.

Clapp and her team-mates have higher hopes this time around.

“We are looking to improve with each game, it will be a tough tournament and we want to build on 2015 and if we do that hopefully it should go well,” the England ace said.
