MP Sir Alan Haselhurst was involved in some important decision making when he attended a school council meeting last week.
The politician listened as pupils from Great Dunmow Primary School discussed the ongoing issues at their school – including a new tuck shop and plumbing problems.
He was then quizzed by the youngsters about his role as an MP.
The children were interested to find out how their meetings differed from parliament and what was the most important vote Sir Alan had been involved in.
Speaking about his visit, Sir Alan said: “This is the first time I have been to the school in quite a while, definitely the first time since Mr Watts has been headteacher. I was very impressed. The meeting was very organised. The children did not try to shout each other down and it was well run.
He added: “This is all part of school life and a great thing for them to be involved in.”
The school council is made up of representatives from each class from year one to year 6. They meet regularly to discuss issues in the school and find solutions.
Secretary of the school council, Jessica McGovern, who is considering becoming an MP herself one day, said: “The meeting went really well and we got through all the items on our agenda.”
