IMPROVEMENTS to Uttlesford’s roads are continuing, with work to repair potholes on the increase.
An extensive programme was launched by Essex Highways to maintain and enhance the county’s road network and a number of roads in Saffron Walden have benefitted.
Cllr Alastair Walters, Uttlesford District Council’s cabinet member for community safety, whose portfolio also includes the Local Highways Panel, said: “This is phase two of a county-wide road maintenance programme, which began in April, following some of the worst prolonged weather conditions on record. It caused a very big increase in the number of potholes, not just in Essex, but throughout the country.
“Over the past two months or so, there has been a substantial improvement in the condition of our roads in the district.”
Cllr Walters said most potholes in Saffron Walden had been repaired, as well as resurfacing of roads in Beeches Close, Victoria Avenue, Rylstone Way, Station Road and Station Street.
“This is very good news, especially for long-suffering motorists, cyclists and motorcyclists,” added Cllr Walters. “But there are still a number of potholes waiting to be repaired which should be fixed as the maintenance programme continues.”
ECC has announced that it will be making some important changes to its highway maintenance priorities as it faces further funding cuts.
Essex Highways has confirmed it will continue to prioritise road problems with an immediate risk – with priority given to roads that have the highest traffic volumes.
