PUPILS from Felsted Primary school won the chance to judge a national competition and award the Nestle Book Prize to their favourite author this week.

The children, aged nine to 11, picked their favourite book from a shortlist of three (Shadow Forest by Matt Haig, Catcall by Linda Newbery, Here Lies Arthur by Phillip Reeve) and presented the award to the winning author at a ceremony held in London at the British Museum.

The children, taught by Kathleen Emerton-Court, were selected to judge the books after completing a creative writing task earlier this year.

The class was one of just 50 UK schools chosen to decide which one they would pick for gold, silver and bronze awards.

The pupils chose Shadow Forest as the Gold winner and therefore, did a project based on that book.

Miss Emerton-Court said: "We filled a suitcase with items connected to the book, one child even created a kit to use if you ever meet an pixie!

"It was a real shock to win as there were lots of entries. We got goody bags and two of my class were asked on stage to announce the winners.
