I REFER to your excellent front page report on Thursday March 6, on the BAA plans for a second runway and associated infrastructure.
This may well be put on indefinite hold due to financial problems. BAA (Ferrovial) have a £9 billion debt to support and also need to fund an additional £1 billion per year for the next few years to support commitments at Heathrow.
It is now possible that the regulators may require BAA (Ferrovial) to sell airports (like Stansted) to reduce debt and break the monopoly held by the Spanish owners but perhaps our generous government might take the debt, as they have for Northern Rock, and charge it all to us.
