LESS than two weeks into the Stansted Public Inquiry and it appears all over, bar the shouting.

As I understand it, under cross-examination, Uttlesford District Council have already conceded that seven of the nine reasons for refusing BAA's application could easily have been mitigated or at least adequately compensated.

They have also now recognised the other two reasons, Climate Change and Economic Benefits, are actually beyond its scope, and not reason enough to reject the application.

These stark admissions clearly highlight the haste in which the Council acted last November. Members obviously had 'voter appeal' in their minds, rather than making sound judgements based on solid facts.

The real shame, however, is the long and drawn Inquiry now under way could have been avoided, and the millions of pounds being wasted on expensive legal teams could have been put to far better use within the community.

I'm sure 'Stop Stansted Expansion' will still be happy to provide the shouting over the next four months!
