I AM currently writing a book about the rural folk customs of England, which I also hope to turn into a film. I am including a chapter about the Dunmow Flitch Trials, and I therefore wondered if you would be able to help by appealing to your readers.
The Dunmow Flitch Trials take place in Great Dunmow every four years, and exist to award a flitch (a side) of bacon to married couples from anywhere in the world, if they can satisfy the judge and jury of six maidens and six bachelors, that in 12 months and a day they have not wished themselves unmarried again.
I am now collecting material for a project about some of Britain's unusual folk customs and would like to hear from anyone who has information, and especially pictures of the Dunmow Flitch Trials, or any other British rural folk custom. Pictures can be old or new as many of these customs are steeped in history.
If you think you can help please write to Henry Buckton at PO Box 2770, Glastonbury, Somerset BA6 9XD, or e-mail: bucktonhenry@tiscali.co.uk If you send original photographs they will be copied and returned.
