THE reduction in crime recorded in Essex after the implementation of a street lighting curfew just goes to confirm something I have been saying for years.
Street lighting does not reduce crime. If anything, it will encourage it.
Most crime occurs in daylight, ergo criminals need light. The introduction of street lighting encourages people to behave at night more as they would during the day, consequently levels of crime can be expected to increase in areas where street lighting has been introduced.
