Courses cost

I WAS interested to read your article regarding the use of the lovely Clarance House.  Last year when I received a copy of the classes held there I called to book a language course, only to be told that due to lack of numbers the class had been cancelled.

I was a little surprised as this was well before the beginning of term, a point I put to the member of staff who took my call. I have searched in vein for a local daytime course.

Another reason for lack of demand could be cost - for anyone not in receipt of benefits (or qualifying for reduced fees for any other reason) the up front sum of anything between £150 and £190 can be too onerous.

Students used to be able to pay per term, which I believe was changed to help reduce the drop-out rate and possibly for ease of admin but it may have actually affected the take-up.
