Saffron Walden Carnival will get the EsseX-Factor when chart-topper Matt Cardle performs on opening night of the popular ‘Eight Day Weekend’.

Cardle, who lives in Halsted and has been playing and writing since he was 11, won the 2010X-Factor. His chart-topper When We Collide peaked at no.1 for three weeks, selling over a million copies to become the second-biggest-selling single in the UK in 2010. His debut album, Letters, reached no.2, selling more than a quarter-million copies.

The singer, songwriter, and guitarist, just released his third album, Porcelain.

Carnival chairman Jason Thomson said: “We could think of no better whey to kick-off the carnival than with a local treasure and we are very excited to have Matt Cardle to lead off what promises to be the best carnival ever.”

The same evening that Cardle takes to the stage, the ever-popular carnival queen competition will climax with the crowning of this year’s face of the carnival. It will make for a truly glitzy and memorable night for the town, and an exciting start for the Eight Day Weekend, with fun for the whole family.

Tickets for the Cardle gig, on July 4, and for all carnival events will go on sale through the website from April, where application forms for the carnival queen competition will also be available. Visit 8dayweekend.co.uk to sign up for carnival alerts, and you will have the chance to win two tickets to the carnival event of your choice.

The full line-up of entertainment will be announced in the next three to four weeks, once contracts with all the artists have all been completed.

“We will have something for everyone,” said Thomson. “As always, carnival will present local favourites and international stars, and the best part is, it’s all for charity.”

The carnival’s Eight Day Weekend runs July 4-12 on the Common and throughout the town.
