The Clavering Players will be revealing plenty when they put on a performance of Calendar Girls next month.
Do you really know the story? Why does a group of ordinary women undertake such an extraordinary venture?
When Annie’s husband John dies of leukemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They persuade fellow WI members to join them in posing nude for an ‘alternative’ WI calendar.
The play explores the effects of the calendar’s success on the women’s relationships with each other, their husbands, those in authority and others trying to take advantage of what becomes an international phenomenon. The humour and sadness demonstrates the support that these women show to their friend in time of need.
Based on the true story of eleven WI members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund, Calendar Girls has been the fastest selling play in British theatre history: make sure you get your ticket now!
Clavering Player’s production is on November 1 (7.30 pm), November (7.30pm) and November 3 (2.30pm) in Clavering Village Hall.
It is directed by Sandra King, and the cast includes Annie (Liz Stewart), Chris (Jennifer Scott-Reid), Marie (Shirley Golding), Ruth (Nettie Hayes), Celia (Charlotte Foster), Cora (Clare Anstead), Jessie (Jenny Whyte), Brenda and Elaine (Michelle Millington), Leanne (Kerri Leach), John (Keith Nuttal), Rod (Simon Lloyd), Lawrence (Dean Kiely) and Lady Cravenshire (Judy Curry).
