Duathlon
IN their first attempt on the World Duathlon circuit, two Walden Tri members were delighted with their performances.
Jack Peasgood and Matt Switzer travelled to Gijon, Spain to compete in a 10k run, 38.4km bike course and finishing with another 5k run against duathletes from all over the globe.
The run took competitors on four laps of a 2.5km loop from the athletics track, round the football stadium, across cobbled paving in the park before finally returning to the track. Peasgood got off to a strong start, gaining an early lead on Switzer, who fought back and finished the first run section two minutes ahead of his compatriot.
After a swift transition, the boys embarked on the bike course. This section involved steep climbs, followed by technical descents and a few hairpin bends. The course played to Peasgood’s strengths and he restored his lead over his team mate during the first of two laps.
Peasgood started the final leg of the race, a 5km run, with a four minute advantage but Switzer put in a strong chase and to close the gap so they finished in 2hrs 2min 36secs and 2hr 4min 31sec, respectively.
Switzer achieved 29th of 44 in the 25-29 age group while Peasgood came 19th out of 35 in the 20-24 race.
