WALDEN secured their place in the London 2NE League for another year with a win over Old Streetonians.
The home team suffered a heavy defeat last week to league leaders Romford which resulted in an apprehensive start. While they looked confident up front, the backs were lacking their normal precision in the opening exchanges.
Walden finally broke the deadlock after forcing their opponents to infringe under the posts. Up stepped Ben Thomas who coolly kicked the three points.
Streetonians instantly replied to take a 5-3 lead but Thomas restored the lead when he touched down in the corner before converting his own score.
Once again the visitors rallied and found themselves attacking deep into the Walden 22-metre line and were awarded a scrum. Streetonians pack drove towards the try-line before the referee adjudged Walden to have collapsed the scrum and awarded a penalty try, which was converted to take a 10-12 lead into the break.
Walden found their rhythm in the second half and if was not long before the game was won. A counter attack from a Streetonian penalty saw Walden utilise a mismatch on the blind side to free Mark Willingale to score a try.
The home pack began to dominate up front and it was not before Thomas was in position to kick another three points.
Streetonians narrowed the gap with a penalty of their own but it proved to be their last opportunity for points as Walden added two more tries to win comfortably. The first from Ben Lockyer who linked up with Adam Miles before Paul Marshall rounded the winger to notch up a bonus point for Walden.
Next up: Walden travel to Chelmsford on January 28, kickoff 2.15pm.
