Final score: Saffron Walden 10 : 57 Romford
HEAD coach Andy Price was left feeling slightly feel aggrieved after Romford piled on points to achieve a very flattering score line.
Walden matched Romford for large portions of the game but two emphatic spells from the visitors saw them add seven tries to inflate the score.
“They deserved to win the game,” said Price. “They are undoubtedly the best team in the league. They are well drilled and well organised and their unbeaten record shows they have no real weaknesses in their side.
“We were not good enough in the first half as our tackling let us down and we gave them too many opportunities.”
Despite a poor first half, by the coach’s admission, Walden got on the scoreboard first when Ben Thomas converted a penalty. Romford replied with two unconverted tries before Paul Marshall continued his excellent run of form with with his seventh try in four games.
Walden switched off toward the end of the half allowing Romford to score three quick tries to take a 10-31 lead.
In the second half, Walden competed with Romford for 30 minutes but a final flurry saw four tries push the score up to 10-57.
Walden welcome the Old Streetonians – who sit two places below them in the league - this weekend and Price knows his team need to win.
“I wouldn’t call it a must win game but a win would make us safe from a relegation fight later in the season,” he said.
“We have already beaten them away from so I have targeted this game as one we should win. We have three players back this week which should strengthen the pack so I would like to a performance like I know we are capable of.”
Next up: Walden play Old Streetonians at home, kick off at 2.15pm.
