Saffron Walden won their first game of the season against Stevenage

WALDEN solved their defensive frailties from last week to record a confident win over Stevenage.

Coach Andy Price watched his team gashed for 39 points against Lowestoft and Yarmouth but Saturday’s match up so was no repeat as his side continued to flex their offensive muscles while limiting their opponents.

Walden were wasteful in the first half, scoring just one try – Paul Marshall touching down in his first game of the season – despite dominating for large spells and even went into the break behind. Jordan McGowan was sin binned with five minutes to go, allowing Stevenage to kick to the corner and set up a scoring sequence from the line out.

A stern talking to from Andy Price had his side firing on all cylinders.

Ben Lockyer was the first to score, linking up with Tom Price to canter under the posts unopposed to give Walden the lead. Price joined his team mate on the score sheet minutes later as he booted the ball over the posts from 35 meters.

Walden continued their dominance as the backs and forwards combined to set up McGowen, who powered through from 10 meters, but a break down in concentration allowed Stevenage back into the game as they reduced the gap to 20-14.

However, the game was won as Ollie Lockyer perfectly offloaded to Harry Beddows who touched down.

Next week Walden travel to North Walsham for their first away fixture, KO 3pm.
