Saffron Walden extend losing streak to 10

THE Bloods’ run of games without a win was extended to 10 this week, ending a disastrous four days.

Walden were knocked out the Red Insure Cup by Cambridge Regional College on Tuesday night after narrowly – and somewhat harshly – losing out to Halstead on Saturday in the Thurlow Nunn Division One.

An unnecessary challenge from James Crane on Ellis Carter saw the referee award a first half spot kick which was dispatched by Lee Murkett for the only goal of the game.

The loss may have worsened Walden’s standing in the league – they are in fifth place – but they can take a lot of positives from the game, mainly the performance of debutant Dane Nelson. The midfielder created opportunities and was a thorn in Halstead’s side for 90 minutes, giving managers Colin Wallington and Nicky Smith another attacking option in the side.

On balance the Bloods were the better team and should have taken three points to show for it. Nelson came close to opening the scoring early on but rattled the post before Ben Riches, on for the injured Nathan Cox, squandered a great chance.

Walden were made to pay from Murkett’s penalty and trailed into the break.

The siege on Halstead’s goal continued in the second half – Matt Snelling and Nelson both came close to levelling arrears.

In search of an equaliser Walden pushed more men forward and almost paid the price but Dan De’ath cleared off the line and David Wooton pulled off a number of saves.

With 10 minutes to go Walden mounted their final attack but Riches, Stuart Wardley, Snelling and Nelson couldn’t find the net.
