WENDENS under-9 and 10 were invited by Wasps RFC to play in their annual Community Cup, a competition for some of the best clubs in the south of England.
The U10 played their first pool game against Marlow, last year’s winners, and drew 0-0 in a very tight game with solid defence from both sides.
Next up were Witney. Wendens played well and won 2-0 with tries from Oliver Davies and Morgan Evans, both scoring from powerful runs through the defending ranks.
Wendens were getting into the high level of rugby, working the ball around the park yet playing a hard game in the rucks to keep winning ball.
The third pool game was against Chesham, and they stuck to their game plan of hard contest for the ball then keeping it alive and moving. It worked as Wendens won 1-0 with a super try from Oisin Murphy after a great cutting run to open up some space from Alex Keys.
Wendens made up for a relatively small team with some excellent technical rugby. Fraser Murray, Olly Morgan, Hunter White, Matthew Saville-Stones, Hamish Russell and Charlie Cansell worked hard in the forwards, whilst the backs of Keys, Evans, Davies, Harris Ashton, played all four games showing great timing of passing and still putting in the hard work in lose play. Harry Mitchell, Quintus Harmer and Murphy made some fine tackles to keep a clean sheet in all the pool games, with some excellent attacking running to follow up.
Meanwhile, Wendens U9 won their pool with some resounding margins showing running skills, strong defence and reading of the game. They had to suffer being knocked out after the quarter final on the toss of a coin after drawing the game. It was another fine display from a very strong squad.
