A COLD misty morning and an away match usually mean a slow start from Saffron Walden - this week, however, the tries flowed their way early in a 70-5 win over Basildon.

Forward Mikey Sharp was first over the line, powering through Basildon’s defence.

A Basildon clearance deep into Saffron Walden territory then found full-back Joshua Flack, who plotted a course, carved through the opposition at speed and carried the ball over for a try between the posts.

The top scorer of the match then entered the fray, winger Dominic Fanning showed his pacy and powerful running to see off the opposition with a hat-trick of tries.

With another try from Flack, and Will Clark and Dan Rust sharing the conversions, the 36-0 half-time score demonstrated Walden’s dominance.

In the second half, Basildon came back fighting and managed to hold on to the ball for longer spells.

However, within 10 minutes Fanning continued his scoring streak by running down the line to score neatly in the corner, closely followed by a similar run and score from Andrew Smith.

Despite Walden’s steadily increasing score, Basildon refused to give in and pushed hard into Walden’s half.

Walden’s defence was solid, though, and after a scrum near the Walden try line the backs neatly carried the ball out to Flack. Sensing his opportunity, he ran the length of the pitch to complete his hat-trick.

The Walden forwards worked hard and prop Harvey Woodbridge pushed through the Basildon line to set up a neat try for Flanker Josh Curtis.

Not to be outdone, second row and captain John Clark reached for the line to score Walden’s final try.

Conversions by Dan Rust continued to build the score. The final try was a deserved consolation for the home side who never gave up.

However, it was always Walden’s day and the final score was nothing more than they deserved.
