Archant

Saffron Walden’s combined U17/18 Colts team racked up eight tries to secure a well-earned victory against a powerful Ely side.

Centre pairing of Andrew Smith and Ben Morris bagged three tries each in a backs dominated game played on a wide pitch with perfect running conditions underfoot.

Wing Sam McReynolds added to the Walden tally, showing impressive support play on the left.

For the forwards, Rory Turtle was able to cross the line late in the first half after a penalty deep in the opposition half was quickly tapped by scrum half Dan Rust and Turtle crashed over.

Leading 25-0 at half time, a Saffron Walden win was never going to be in doubt. However, after Morris punched a hole in the defensive line in the first minute of the second half to record his second try, Walden then took their foot off the gas pedal and allowed Ely back into the game. On two occasions, indiscipline at the ruck allowed the Ely forwards to rumble forward and recycle. From just a few metres out, Walden were unable to stop two home tries.

Walden’s superior fitness levels then began to tell. In the final quarter, Walden were able to cross twice more to wrap up the match on a high note.
