Newport Free Grammar School swept the board at the Essex hockey cup finals.

With all four teams having fought their way through to finals day held at Chelmsford Hockey Club, hopes were high of bringing back some silverware... but the final outcome was an outstanding achievement.

The first final involved the U14 girls against New Hall. Although Newport dominated possession this proved to be a tight match and only a fine strike from captain Victoria Hill separated the teams.

The U14 boys then took on Southend High School. Once again goals proved elusive and it took a good deflection from Freddie Colclough after James Barker had fired the ball into the circle to break the stalemate.

The U16 girls followed against a strong side from King John School. It looked as if Newport’s successful day was to be dented when they were trailing by a single goal with just a few minutes left. However, Kate Robinson brought them fresh hope with a fine solo goal which took the match into extra time. Their confidence boosted, they pushed forward and Amy Norman found the net to clinch the cup.

The final game saw the U16 boys take on Westcliff High and for the first time the result was not in doubt after George Pitfield scored two early goals. Spencer Hill added another before half time. Pitfield completed his hat-trick after the break before further goals were added by Tommy Cox and Dan Francis.
