Saffron Walden local football round up

Barkway & Barley 0 Radwinter 3

RADWINTER won this game in good fashion, with goals from Richard Sharpe, Adam Ashenden (penalty) and Luke Thomas.

It was a well ground-out performance in extremely poor conditions, both teams struggling with the pitch deteriorating throughout the game. Radwinter coped better, and were the stronger team over the 90 minutes.

This win places Radwinter second in the league.

THE points were shared in this entertaining encounter as Rangers managed to equalise three times against a Crocus side looking to return to winning ways.

Captain Stuart Sheperd and Kieren Lock returned to the Crocus defence and were called upon quickly as the away team absorbed pressure early, and had chances to hit Rangers on the break, but struggled to breach the high defensive line.

However, Crocus managed to open the scoring with a first goal for Daniel Bennett, angling a looping backward header home following a Ross Millard free kick.

Rangers went close after hitting the bar from a long range drive but Crocus were still creating chances, with Rob O’brien unlucky to scuff his close range shot just wide.

Rangers equalised after Phil Dillon headed home a far post corner.

As the game opened up, Daniel Walker managed to finally break the home team’s high line to coolly finish and put the visitors ahead at the interval.

The open theme continued into the second half, and after a Walker strike was disallowed, Rangers were the next to score after a midfielder found the space to strike a superb 25-yard effort into the top right corner of the goal.

The home side gained momentum and hit the crossbar twice more from efforts from outside the box.

After re-grouping, Crocus managed to regain the lead again after Walker was put clear, his shot parried only into the path of top scorer Adam Daniels, who slotted home.

With the game drawing to a close, Rangers forced an equaliser when a parried effort fell to Aaron Ridgewell to poke home from close range.

Crocus travel to Sawston Rovers Reserves next.

Bottisham & Lode A 0

Saffron Dynamos 9

SAFFRON Dynamos returned to league action Saturday with a convincing nine-goal win at Bottisham.

But the win was marred after Dynamos James Wesley suffered a bad injury and had to go to hospital.

Dynamos took the game to their host from the kick off and took the lead on 20 minutes through Daniel Rouse’s penalty.

Seven minutes later Rouse finished well to make it two.

The visitors upped the tempo in the second half as they ran riot. Rouse bagged two more, and Sam Coleman-Raine, Charlie Brockwell, captain Ryan Barry and Daniel Rowlandson made it eight.

The ninth was supplied by a home defender.

Saffron Dynamos host Whittlesford on Saturday, kick off 2pm at Carver Barracks.
