Louis Harper in action for Saffron Walden

THE Bloods are “crying out” for someone to put the ball in the net, according to Colin Wallington after seeing his side dominate a goalless draw.

Saffron Walden controlled the game from start to finish but were unable to trouble the score sheet as they thundered the goal frame and saw shots scrambled off the line.

Wallington told the Reporter his side needs a little bit of luck to ease the pressure off and get back to scoring goals.

“I was very disappointed by the result – not the performance because we did not play badly but we should have won.

“We had the chances to score but we couldn’t put the ball in the net. Unless we can solve that issue up front it will be a problem and we won’t get anywhere.”

He added: “It’s beginning to hurt us because points are becoming precious at this stage in the season.”

The Bloods have focussed training sessions on shooting in a bid to change the team’s fortunes but they did not reap the rewards against Whitton.

Top scorer Stuart Wardley, pushed into a more advanced role, should have scored in the sixth minute but he shot was cleared off the line. Louis Harper was the next to test Whitton’s Liam Jones but he could not find a way past the inspired goalkeeper.

The Bloods continued to press but neither Matt Snelling nor Nathan Cox could find an elusive first goal as the first half closed out scoreless.

Kicking towards the newly-completed Catons Lane shelter in the second half, Wardley and Alex Riches both saw efforts come close before two questionable off-side decisions frustrated Wallington.

Six minutes from time Crane’s shot was well saved by man-of-the-match, and the Bloods had to settle for just one point.

After the game Wallington admitted he may have to look elsewhere for a goal-scorer if Walden are going to still be in the hunt for promotion in May.

“I don’t like to change the team but if I could find someone who could score regularly then they would play from now until the end of the season,” he said.

Walden will hope to get back to winning ways with a trip to Team Bury at Ram Meadow on Saturday, 3pm KO.
