Golf: Gosfield seniors win season opener against Benton Hall

12:51 16 April 2014

The start of the 2014 season began well for the Gosfield Lake seniors against the seniors of Benton Hall.

The Essex Golf Union’s first round of the Essex Seniors Team Championship took place at Benton Hall and was closely contested. With 11 players on each side the first team to win six games is the victor and normally this seems to happen on the penultimate or last game.

However, the Gosfield Lake seniors took an immediate and decisive lead wining five and halving two from the first eight matches.

Good wins by Derek Lunn 6&5 and Arthur Stoney 6&4 were backed up by Chris Wash, Trevor Joyce and Colin Cooper. Martin Gorham and Malachy Shields had to fight back in their games to earn the two important halves to carry Gosfield Lake through.

Benton Hall with strength at the bottom of the order won three games to bring the final score 6-5 in Gosfield Lake’s favour. The Gosfield Lake team were rewarded by a home draw in the next round of the competition and will face the strong team of Thorpe Hall.
