YOUNGSTERS of all ages ‘dropped in’ at Saffron Walden’s skate park last weekend for a huge community event billed as “the Olympic Games for the youth of today”.

Hundreds travelled from far and wide to enjoy the spirit of the SX Urban Games – with families and revellers young and old all taking part in a host of festivities.

Bradley Howe, 17, a member of Saffron Walden Skate Group, was instrumental in organising the fun-filled occasion along with pals Toby Martin, 20, and Terry Duck, 16.

He told the Reporter it was fantastic to see everyone come together and show their support for One Minet Skate Park.

“People came from all over the place – it was insane. Kids from as young as four were there and many who use the park regularly brought their parents and grandparents along to watch.

“It was really nice to see how supportive all the parents were of their children and they must have been very proud to see them showing off their tricks and getting huge applause from everyone watching.”

Skateboarders, BMXers and rollerbladers from across the district and beyond united for the event, which was part of an Essex County Council initiative aimed at creating a lasting legacy for London 2012.

The event was run in partnership with the Lord Butler Leisure Centre, with everyone who came along given a free membership pass to use its facilities on the day, and activities included trampolining, carpet bowls and street dancing, as well as skateboarding, BMXing and scootering.

There was also a VW Camper Van show in the car park, face painting, skateboard decorating, a selection of art from the Urban Picnic photo gallery and a cycle trail around the town.

Secretary of Saffron Walden Skate Group, Jane Clarke, said: “The day was fantastic and there was such a lovely, community atmosphere about it. The event was all organised by the skate group and I’m really proud of them.”
