Sam Brearey and his partner Tom Gillard pipped their Australian rivals to the post on the final day of racing to take the 2012 International Fireball World Championships by a single point.

Having won four of the eight previous races, the British pair saw their Australian rivals win the penultimate race which saw both teams heading into the final race on 12 points.

Brearey and Gillard were looking to get the best possible start and as a result they were recalled for a false start, adding more tension to the palpable atmosphere. At the gun, the Australian team got off to the better start but the Brits surged back through the pack to take the lead.

Two mistakes by the Brearey and Gillard let their rivals close the gap before they overtook to lead by a boat length but, once again, the Brits bounced back to take pole position.

With only the final mark between them and victory, Brearey and Gillard held it together to cross the line in first place to take the gold.
