ESSEX County Council is encouraging local athletes hopeful of competing in the London 2012 Games to apply to become team Essex ambassadors.
Developed by Essex County Council, the Team Essex Ambassador Awards provides a bursary to top tier athletes who have been identified by their National Governing Body of Sport as having the potential to compete at the games.
Thirteen successful applicants will each receive a £6,500 bursary to help with the costs of training and competing at the highest level. In return for the award the athletes will become Essex sporting ambassadors, where they contribute time to visit schools and community projects, inspiring young people and residents across the county to become involved in sport and encourage interest in the London 2012 Games.
Applications to the scheme will close on September 30. Application forms are available to download from essexlegacy.org/teamessex
Cllr Stephen Castle, ECC cabinet member for education and the 2012 Games said: ‘I am delighted that the Team Essex Ambassador programme is able to support local talented athletes for a fourth year.
“The calibre of applicants over the past three years has been outstanding and their dedication to their chosen sports an inspiration to us all’.
