Duathlon: WaldenTri trio excel at Eton Dorney

Three WaldenTRI athletes took part in the the Votwo Duathlon series at Eton Dorney on Saturday – and all finished in the top 10 out of over 100 athletes.

Craig Dyce and Michael Buchallet, of Walden Tri, and Charlie Passfield of WaldenTRI Junior, provided an excellent combined performance in an event they were using as part of their training for the world championships later this year.

The event consisted of two runs of 5km split by a cycle of 20km, which was on tarmac and so avoiding competing on the waterlogged surrounding area.

All three were within a handful of places after the first 5km run, all inside the top 15, with only 13 seconds separating them. They managed to avoid any mechanical problems on the bike leg, allowing each to be in contention for a high level finish.

Passfield ended the race with a strong second run and a sprint finish to lead the trio home with third place overall in a time of 1hr 10mins 29secs, narrowly ahead of Dyce in fifth.

Buchallet finished a creditable 10th out of a field of 104 athletes.

It was a fine performance from the Saffron Walden men at such an early stage of the season.
