Blomqvist struggles for speed as F3 makes stop at classic Zandvoort circuit

RED Bull junior driver Tom Blomqvist came away with three top 10 finishes at the weekend – but dropped a spot in the championship standings.

At the historic Circuit Park in Zandvoort, Holland, the 19-year-old notched up a ninth and two eighth places having struggled for speed from the start of free practice on Friday through to race three on Sunday.

“It’s been a pretty tough weekend,” Blomqvist said of the latest round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. “We have to really take a hard look at things and see where we are missing the speed. I am hoping that I have a better weekend when we race at Vallelunga.”

In races one and two the Saffron Walden racer qualified ninth and was able to get good starts, making up a couple of positions, but in the opening event he took a gamble which failed to pay off.

Blomqvist was nudged wide having chosen to take to the outside of turn one, a move which cost him five spots, and ended up ninth.

During the second race he worked his way up to seventh before the lack of straight-line speed in his Eurointernational car proved costly. After witnessing him become a sitting duck, the team worked hard to try and correct the problem ahead of the final race. However, it meant removing downforce and Blomqvist took the chequered flag in the position he started from.

He now sits seventh in the championship. The penultimate round takes place from October 12-13 at Vallelunga in Italy.
