The region could be in line for a dusting of snow today (Monday) as a weather system bringing freezing conditions from the east makes its way across the country.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow, which is in force from 2pm until midnight, with temperatures remaining in and around freezing.

A spokesman for the forecaster said: “Snow showers, already affecting eastern parts of England early on Monday, are expected to become more persistent and more widespread through Monday afternoon and evening.

“There is the potential for travel delays on roads, stranding of some vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel. Some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.”

And there could be more to come tomorrow (Tuesday), with the Met Office upgrading its warning from yellow to amber - meaning snow showers are expected to be heavier and most disruptive.

The spokesman added: “Further snow showers are expected through Tuesday, these likely to be heavy in places and probably aligned in bands. Where this happens, there is the potential for 5-10 cm of powdery snow accumulating, possibly very locally 15 cm, through the morning, before easing during the afternoon.”

The worst of the weather is expected between 2am and midday on Tuesday.
