Yes, this incredible opportunity is a real job.
Great Dunmow’s Paralympic Team gold medallist Dan Bentley is recruiting a new sports assistant to help get him ready for the next Games in Brazil, and accompany him if he gets selected for Paralympics GB.
The exciting role would include driving the 29-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, to boccia training sessions, camps and competitions – some of which could be abroad – and assist his training.
But it is not all travelling and sports – the successful candidate should be prepared for royal appointments as Dan, along with his current sports assistant Liz Wilks, has met the Queen on a number of occasions on the back of his success.
Dan, who has been in the GB boccia squad for 10 years, said: “It can be hard work and long days but it is an exciting job.
“The candidate will be required to understand the role in facilitating me in achieving my self-defined needs and must be confident to ask what these are.
“It is very important that my new sports assistant is friendly and has a sense of humour.”
The sports star won a Team gold medal in Beijing in 2008 and a Team bronze in London 2012. His next big goal is to make it to his third Paralympics in Rio.
Liz, who has been his sports assistant for the past four years, described it as an incredibly rewarding role.
She said: “It is an amazing insight into disabled sport. The legacy of 2012 has shown what everyone could do in the Games and what is involved behind the scenes – it is great to be part of that.
“Dan is such an inspiration and it has been incredible to watch him progress. The job is very exciting and there is always something different every week.”
The sports assistant must be prepared to assist with Dan’s personal requirements which will be discussed at the interview stage. The role is not voluntary and the successful applicant will be paid.
