UDC raised a Commonwealth flag on Monday (March 13)

Hundreds of flags were flown for the Commonwealth on Monday (March 13) and Uttlesford District Council (UDC) joined in at its offices in Saffron Walden.

Councillor John Davey, chairman of the council, read out a message from the secretary general of the Commonwealth as well as a specially written affirmation before raising the Commonwealth flag at full mast.

UDC was one of more than 950 locations to be involved in the collective expression of commitment of all Commonwealth member states to democracy, development and respect for diversity on Commonwealth Day.

The Commonwealth is made up of fifty-three sovereign states and includes a diverse mix of countries.

In London, the day was celebrated with a multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey, which was attended by the Queen.

Prince Philip, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry, the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex were also be in attendance.
