AFTER being blown away by the first Saffron Walden Maze Festival in 2011, artist Bryony Pritchard is delighted to be involved with the second.
The maze-enthusiast will be bringing a month’s worth of ideas to the four-day event (running August 16-19) after working closely with the committee.
Bryony, the artist-in-residence, said: “I’m really looking forward to being the artist in residence at the maze festival. It is such a treat to be offered time, space and support to develop my maze ideas.
“I’m really excited to see how the community react and play.”
The Leeds-based interdisciplinary artist has been designing and building mazes since 2007. In recent years she has worked on a frozen lake in Sweden along with other artists building a sculpture park of frozen mazes.
For the Saffron Walden event Bryony, whose original training is in dance, is developing a colourful maze within a section in the cluster of trees on The Common.
She said: “I have a strong interest in observing how the public move and travel within the mazes I build. This often inspires my next maze idea.
“This year, I am exploring sensory mazes, working with people who have hearing impairment or reduced eyesight.
“This is an invitation for everybody to fully immerse themselves in colour, movement and depth of materials. I’m hoping to offer the people of Saffron Walden a maze style zoetrope [a device for producing illusions].”
Visitors will be encouraged to take a slow walk through the maze and experience a sensory journey with different tactile materials and sound.
On Saturday Bryony will be hosting a drop-in maze workshop where people can design, build and decorate a giant maze on the Common. Families can also enjoy story and movement activities with Bryony in Saffron Walden Library on Sunday.
Emma Horton, a committee member for the festival organisers, said: “We are very happy to have Bryony.
“Not only will she bring a huge amount of enthusiasm and expertise but she is a lovely person and incredibly talented.”
