Abseiling, military divers and a Red Bull stunt plane were all part of the family fun as Carver Barracks threw open its gates to the community.

Around 5,500 people descended on the Wimbish base on Saturday as an open day was held with a whole host of entertainment.

Commanding officer of 101 Regiment, Lt Col Simon Stockley OBE, told the Reporter the day had been a “huge success”, surpassing the number of visitors who turned out at last year’s event.

A children’s assault course, climbing wall, remote-controlled vehicles and a ‘Find the Sniper’ stand gave the public plenty to do, while the air was also filled with music from the Band of the Royal Corps of Engineers and local folk band ‘Mind the Gap’.

There was also a fast rope demonstration by Commando and Para trained soldiers.

Activity stands included ‘find the buried mine’, a night vision goggle maze and a military diving underwater demonstration.

Families also had the opportunity to drive a mini digger, military working dogs showed off their skills, and a range of military equipment was on display. These included variants of the Mastiff armoured vehicle, tactical quad bikes, Pinzgauer troop carriers, OSHKOSH truck and Terex Crane.

All profits raised from the day will be donated to SSAFA (Lifelong support to Our Soldiers and their Families).
