On Monday 7 July, Uttlesford residents will be able to enjoy the spectacle of Le Tour when the world’s top cyclists take to the streets of Essex for Stage 3 of the race.

Roads in Uttlesford and Braintree will be closed from 7.30am to 4pm. The route will need to be clear of all public vehicles prior to the road closure time, with pedestrian access available while the roads are closed through stewarded crossing points.

The official route is as follows:

Saffron Walden

• The route enters the town on the B184 from the A11 and down Windmill Hill.

• In the centre of Saffron Walden it turns left at the traffic signals from High Street into George Street / Hill Street.

• It continues into East Street and on to the B1053 / Radwinter Road.

Radwinter/Great Sampford

• In Radwinter the B1053 becomes the B1054 for a short distance.

• Just east of Radwinter you turn right on to the B1053 again.

• It continues on the B1053 until just west of Great Sampford where it becomes the B1051 for a short distance.

• In Great Sampford turn left on to the B1053 again.

Finchingfield

• Continue on the B1053 through Finchingfield.

• Continue to Wethersfield where you turn right to continue on the B1053.

• Continue on B1053 until Church End then turn right on to unnamed road towards Shalford Green.

• Continue on unnamed road towards Rayne passing through Duckend Green.

• Enter Rayne on Shalford Road and go straight across at the traffic lights into Gore Road.

• Turn right into New Road with the Flitch Way on your right.

• Follow this road and it becomes School Road and goes over the A120.

Felsted

• Follow this road through Bannister Green towards Felsted.

• In Felsted you take Braintree Road, the B1417, and then you turn left into Chelmsford Road in the centre of Felsted.

• Continue on the B1417 until you give way and turn left on to the B1008.

Almost nine hours of road closures is needed, according to Essex County Council. This will allow the route to be prepared, infrastructure to be put in place and removed afterwards, the Tour’s publicity ‘caravan’ of vehicles to travel through the stage, the race itself and the safe dispersal of spectators.

Cllr Howard Rolfe, cabinet member for community partnerships and engagement at Uttlesford District Council, said: “We are pleased that the route and road closure details have been confirmed today which will provide some clarity to our residents and local businesses.

“As a district council we will be working with our partners, including the county council and the Tour organisers, to continue to provide further information about the event and accompanying arrangements.

“The Tour is an international occasion and it will be exciting to watch and be part of as it passes through our District – hopefully it will stimulate a legacy of cycling and well-being.”

Essex County Council is working with a range of partners to help deliver the plans for the day. These include experts who were involved in the delivery of the traffic and crowd management plans for London 2012.

County councillor Ann Naylor, cabinet member for public health & wellbeing, said: “Monday 7 July will be a celebration of cycling in Essex. It’s with real pride that we will welcome the world’s elite sporting cyclists.

“An amazing and unforgettable spectacle is promised against the backdrop of our beautiful rural and urban county. This unique event can’t fail to inspire even more people to take to their own bikes to get around or explore the sport of cycling.”
