Newport ward by-election

A plus point for Residents for Uttlesford for the evening was the election of Anthony Gerard in the Newport ward by-election, which was called after Councillor Jo Parry’s decision to step down and move to the USA.

Gerard picked up 623 votes versus Paul Simper (Conservative) with 381 and Jayne Pacey (Lib Dem) who won 325.

Voter turnout in Uttlesford was up significantly from the last county council elections in 2013 with all four divisions seeing an increase.

Dunmow saw a 3.5% increase from four years ago, while 4.7% more people turned out to vote in Saffron Walden.

Stansted saw a whopping 12.5% voter increase from 28% in 2013 to 40.5% this year, although the Newport ward by-election, which saw a 48.6% turnout, may have well played a part in those numbers.

Thaxted Division also saw a 4.3% jump from 29.4% four years ago to 33.7% this time around.
