Householders heading for cut in Uttlesford’s council tax

UTTLESFORD residents could be in line for a Council Tax cut under proposals being considered by the district council’s cabinet tonight (Tuesday November 20).

The cabinet is being asked to endorse a proposal to reduce the district council portion of the 2013/14 Council Tax bill by 1 per cent.

Should the cabinet agree, then the reduction will form part of the budget that full council will be asked to approve in February, ahead of the new financial year in April. The move would follow three successive years of a freeze in the district council element of the bill.

Cllr Robert Chambers, cabinet member for Finance, said: “We appreciate that many people are hard pressed in the current difficult economic circumstances and this proposal would allow the district council in a small way to help them.

“Uttlesford has the lowest Council Tax in Essex and taking inflation into account, the proposal for next year represents a cumulative 10 per cent cut since the council first froze Council Tax in 2010.

“Although local authorities are operating within tough financial constraints, Uttlesford District Council has been very careful with its budget management.

“What this means is that the council is now able to afford to reduce the amount of Council Tax it charges while still maintaining its services.”
