Prayers for sunshine and cloudless skies were answered as thousands poured into Dunmow for the carnival on Saturday.

Spectators watched as the parade trundled through the town, as the Dunmow carnival queen and princesses, dressed in blue and gold, waved to their subjects.

Carnival princesses from as far as Corby, who finished the parade on foot as their float broke down, took part in the parade, along with over 60 other groups.

David Beedle, one of carnival organisers, said: “It was excellent to see so many people about. The weather was absolutely perfect. Even the car parking was brilliant this year.”

Councillor Barrie Easter, Great Dunmow mayor, said: “I would like to thank the carnival committee for working so hard this past year. The shop windows were excellent, as were the displays by schools and clubs. A big ‘thank you’ to all who arrived on Sunday to clear up. Well done to the people of Great Dunmow.”
