I AM glad your newspaper has brought to the attention of local people the threat to this watermill.

House conversion ruins the character of a watermill. Pieces of the ancient machinery will be taken out to make room for living space, and afterwards there will be no way of checking whether the remaining machinery is being maintained, or even left in place.

Uttlesford District Council do not seem to take seriously their stewardship of the precious historic buildings in their area.

These are part of our common heritage and should not be regarded simply as cash cows for owners who have neglected them for years.
